Theatre Craft

Jules Goddard, head of our Ticketing & Sales Marketing team, will present a marketing workshop at the Theatrecraft 2014 careers fair for young people at the Royal Opera House on 17th October. This lively and hands-on session will give young people a glimpse into the world of arts marketing, explaining how we engage with target audiences and maximise the potential of each show's unique selling points. The group will then have fun devising their own exciting marketing campaign for a major new musical!

Theatrecraft is free and offers 16-25-year-olds a unique look at a whole range of careers behind the scenes in the theatre industry, from direction and stage management to design and marketing. Workshops, tours and networking hubs all form an invaluable experience for those interested in the theatre and you can find out more at www.theatrecraft.org

A run for your money!

Three plucky members of Dewynters' staff have generously volunteered to run the Royal Parks half-marathon in aid of the brilliant charity, Kids Co. Marc Peachey, Caroline Fox and Linzi Allen have all joined forces to run the gruelling race that takes place on Sunday 12 October and winds its way through the streets of central London, and the beautiful surroundings of Hyde Park. This is set to be a huge challenge for all three runners and we're sure their remarkable efforts – or pain, rather – will be rewarded by a flood of donations to what is an immensely worthwhile charity. July saw the introduction of our new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory drinks bottle and it's already a big hit at the theatre shop, with almost 500 crossing the counter in three weeks.

Available on its own or full of iced slush drink, it's this summer's hottest, cool item. We'll drink to that!

MAMMA MIA! is flying high!

MAMMA MIA! has really got the arrivals and departure tunnels at Gatwick Airport into the holiday spirit with a takeover of the digital screens. The sunny 12 and 6-sheets adorned the walls between 16 June to 13 July, before even more digital 6-sheets light up the arrival halls of both Gatwick and Stansted airports between 28 July to 10 August. Gatwick is the UK's second largest airport and serves 34 million passengers each year. Backed up by our multi-language leaflets, which are also available at Heathrow Airport, this campaign is a real passport to success.

Big Cats adventure

To announce the return of CATS this December, we held a very special launch event at the London Palladium. Two hundred ticket agents along with fifty members of the press were invited to enter through the stage door and enjoy exclusive access to areas of the legendary theatre that they never would have seen before. Champagne in hand, they were then seated backstage in front of a giant screen that showed a short CATS clip, before enjoying an introduction, talk and Q&A with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Trevor Nunn and Gillian Lynne. They were also treated to an absolutely storming performance from the new cast, before the safety curtain was raised giving the guests a breathtaking view out into the spectacular auditorium.

We then sent them away, suitably dazzled, with goodie bags that were quite simply the cat's pyjamas!

Memphis, Magic!

Memphis the Musical launched in dazzling style at the legendary live music venue Ronnie Scott's on 10th June, with amazing support from London's No 1 commercial radio station Magic FM 105.4. The event was hosted by drive-time DJ Angie Greaves and featured a fascinating Q&A with stars Beverley Knight and Killian Donnelly, and the musical's composer and co-founder of Bon Jovi, David Bryan, before Beverley and Killian treated the audience to electrifying live performances of songs from the show. Magic FM plugged the launch extensively on air and also directed listeners to their website where the whole event was streamed live. The smash-hit Broadway musical opens here in London in October at the Shaftesbury Theatre, and you can watch Magic FM's brilliant highlights video of the launch here

Miss Saigon achieved a magnificent media first with three consecutive right-hand page ads in the Sunday Times Culture on 15th June. The sumptuous, high-profile 28x3 ads showcased the show's amazing press reviews, as well as the talents of the West End's hottest new property, Eva Noblezada, who plays the lead role of Kim. The prestigious Culture magazine has a readership of 2,354,000 and circulation of 844,528, and this is the first time they've allowed a campaign to take three consecutive pages.

The Heat Is On In Cromwell Road!

Miss Saigon has taken over Clear Channel's enormous 75-metre long Cromwell Road site, one of the largest outdoor advertising locations in the UK. The six consecutive 96-sheets are situated along the M4 corridor which is not only Europe's busiest 'A' road but also a route to Heathrow Airport, delivering 24-hour traffic flow and a phenomenal 2.39 million impacts over the campaign's two-week run. The gigantic back-lit panels are the perfect setting for our bold and beautiful artwork which cannot fail to catch the eye and take the breath away. Just as the poster says... "WOW!".

As Mamma Mia celebrates its amazing 15th year in the West End, our in-house photographer Matt Crockett popped down to get some great snaps of the new cast members in rehearsal. The gorgeous behind-the-scenes photos have been picked up by both WhatsOnStage.com and broadwayworld.com and show the new team working through their paces, including Rebecca Lock (Avenue Q, Mary Poppins and Phantom of the Opera) and Alasdair Harvey (We Will Rock You, Forbidden Broadway and Sunday in the Park with George) ahead of their big debut.

Champions to the end!

We Will Rock You has taken a final bow after 12 victorious years in the West End. The longest ever running show at the huge Dominion Theatre and the ninth longest running show in the West End has played over 4,500 performances, sold an incredible 6,600,000 tickets in London alone and a staggering 15,000,000 tickets worldwide. The blockbuster musical has spent every night of its record-breaking run sending audiences ga ga to the greatest hits of Queen, and won the prestigious Olivier Audience Award in 2011. We're so proud to have worked on the show since the very beginning and it's been a special kind of magic to have been part of its phenomenal success through the years. We will miss you!

An in-store promotion in 400 branches of Tesco Extra and Tesco Metro nationwide will see each bottle of the authentic Vietnamese beer feature a Miss Saigon-branded collar with a competition mechanic that links to the show's official website. And as the official drinks partner of the musical, Saigon beers sponsored the huge press night party with 4,000 bottles, received a half-page ad in the show programme and will also see their beers sold in the bars of the Prince Edward Theatre, home of the new smash-hit production of the legendary show. Our promotions team have done it again – cheers!!!

MAMMA MIA! has married up with Müller Light Greek yoghurt for the perfect promotional partnership! The idyllic Greek theme ties the two brands together beautifully in a collaboration that celebrates MAMMA MIA!'s 15th anniversary year in delicious style. The Müller Light Greek Style range sells on average 2.2 million packs (around 9 million pots) per month from the UK's leading retailers, including Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose and Co-Op.

With an on-pack promotion across seven different Greek-style flavours set to run for a minimum of four weeks, a takeover of the Müller website, weekly competitions and presence across their newsletters and Facebook page (over 93,000 likes in the UK alone), the exposure for MAMMA MIA! is spectacular. It's a match made in heaven!

The Dewynters masterchefs raised an amazing £440 for the wonderful Kids Co in our lunchtime bake sale this week. A mouthwatering feast of home-cooked dishes from around the world had staff from all Wellington House companies dipping into their pockets for a good cause.

Kids Co are a fantastic charity that provide invaluable support to vulnerable and deprived children across London and Bristol; in many cases, a meal at a Kids Co refuge centre is the only meal and source of nutrition they get each day.

A huge thanks to all of the Dewynters chefs who contributed, and of course a cordon bleu thank you to everyone who attended and raised such an impressive amount in such a short space of time.

Charlie and Waterstones really take the biscuit!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Biscuiteers have taken over the flagship Waterstones Piccadilly store in spectacular style. Following the creation of a special edition Charlie-themed box of biscuits, a giant chocolate biscuit replica of the Chocolate Factory and scenes from the show were created in the window of the huge book store in London's West End to mark 50 years of the legendary book.

Dewynters then recreated the Wonka gates on the second floor of the store to form a magically fantastical entrance to the children's section. Personal appearances by Willy Wonka and Charlie from the smash-hit show also helped maximise the promotion which has since spread to the windows of eight other London Waterstones stores, including Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden.

With golden competitions also running in association with Puffin, Penguin, The Dahl Estate, Tate & Lyle, this promotion will reach in excess of eight million people! How about that for pure imagination!

Making a difference in 2014

Dewynters has chosen the wonderful Kids Company as our company charity for the coming year.This award-wining charity works tirelessly to provide practical, emotional and educational support to 36,000 vulnerable inner-city children across London and Bristol, including some of the most deprived and at risk who face constant threats of violence and chronic abuse. Kids Co feed and clothe many children at their refuge centres, and strive to provide a safe, caring, family environment tailored to each child, helping them to lead positive and fulfilling lives. We're excited to raise money for Kids Co this year through a whole host of fun activities and challenges, such as the Dewynters Theatreland Walk, kids’ parties, a half-marathon, a London to Brighton challenge (ouch!) and much, much more.

More Than Once Club

ONCE have launched a loyalty scheme to reward the hundreds of devoted fans who come to see the show – more than once!

Fans are being supplied with loyalty cards, which get stamped at the box office every time they see the show. When the card is full, they receive membership cards to the MORE THAN ONCE CLUB, an exclusive group of the show’s most loyal supporters. Members will be provided with exclusive access to discounts, special cast events, news and lots more.

London Newcomer of the Year

Dewynters is proud to sponsor the prestigious London Newcomer of the Year Award at the annual WhatsOnStage Awards. The WhatsOnStage Awards, now in their 14th year, are the original “theatregoers’ choice” prizes, and the only major UK theatre awards decided across the board by the public. Previous winners of London Newcomer of the Year include Will Young, Tim Minchin and Daniel Radcliffe.

This year’s award went to Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, for his theatrical debut in the stunning production of MOJO at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Asked if he now has the theatrical bug, Grint said ‘I really think I do… There’s nothing like it, and I’ll definitely be doing it again.’

After Midnight programme

Dewynters have produced the souvenir programme for acclaimed Broadway musical After Midnight, hailed as "The number one Broadway musical of the year!" by New York Magazine. Currently playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, the show which stars the likes of KD Lang, Babyface and Toni Braxton catapults the greatest music of Duke Ellington and Harlem's golden age into the 21st century. The beautiful 24-page full colour souvenir programme features shots of the original Broadway cast that included Dulé Hill and Fantasia, and marks an exciting addition to Dewynters' publishing work on Broadway.

The Bodyguard has launched a wonderfully festive competition that could win someone the perfect Christmas present. A tribute to the boys of '41

From Here to Eternity marked the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor with a very special performance from the Military Wives Choir on 7th December. Performing alongside the cast, the Choir gave a moving curtain call rendition of "The Boys of '41" which was written for the Pearl Harbor invasion scene in the show. Tim Rice describes how the song, although inspired by the dramatic events of 1941, "found a contemporary resonance when sung so beautifully by the Military Wives Choir of today". It was a wonderful experience for everyone there that night, and a beautiful tribute that will last long in the memory.

Dewynters has helped turn Piccadilly Circus into a magical winter wonderland again this Christmas. For the 5th year in a row Dewynters has been the exclusive live events partner of the breathtaking snow globe that surrounds the Statue of Eros, and this year the ad sites, advertising some of the biggest shows in the West End, have been digitalised to stunning effect. An estimated 2 million people pass through the world-famous Piccadilly Circus right in the heart of London every week, and with the sites live right through the festive season from 18 November to 5 January, this is a beautiful blizzard of publicity that no one's going to miss!

Listen to Spotify for Once!

Once has become the first musical in the world to record an exclusive Spotify Session! The remarkable gig was recorded at Spotify HQ to be uploaded to the Spotify app, placing it alongside a whole world of popular music artists. Spotify only record 12-15 gigs each year, heavily promoted by their blog and vast social networks, so this is an extraordinary opportunity for a West End production. The entire gig will be streamed at http://oncemusical.co.uk/spotify at 12:30pm on December 4th.

Once has also released five tracks from the cast recording, which can now be heard on the official website or right here http://bit.ly/oncecastep. The release was teased by an exclusive Twitter campaign from Official London Theatre, and the playlist has been seeded on key theatre websites and blogs such as whatsonstage.com. Once more amazing!

Touring Exhibitions Meeting

Dewynters were thrilled to be the keynote speakers at the Touring Exhibitions conference in Berlin, which brought together promoters and venues from over 30 countries across the globe. Speaking on how new opportunities have influenced the way in which Dewynters market to UK arts and entertainment audiences, our talk covered all things new in social media, seeding, digital outdoor, partnerships, the sales force, and how to create stand-out through branding and design. It was a real honour to speak at such a prestigious industry event, and it's always a pleasure to share our knowledge and experience

Once the Musical and national station Absolute Radio have got together for a unique promotion that's really shaking up the airwaves. Absolute are breaking their famous "No Repeat Guarantee" by playing certain songs from the smash-hit musical more than once in a single work day, changing their long-held policy about repeating any single song between 10am-5pm. With a music-loving, gig-going audience, Absolute is the perfect promotional partner for Once, and along with promo trails, live reads and a special online 'Once" hub, the award-winning station is also running a fantastic competition each day giving listeners the chance to win tickets for the show and a stay in a luxurious West End hotel.

Practicing once a week and tackling anything from Mozart to Madonna, our set of songstrels won't be performing at The Palladium any time soon, but are getting a real kick out of their lunchtime harmonies.

Front-of-house branding at the Birmingham Hippodrome and the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin

Walt Disney's The Lion King has certainly made a big impression on its current tour of the UK and Ireland. With the help of the Dewynters studio, the global box office phenomenon installed breathtakingly king-size front-of-house branding at the Birmingham Hippodrome and the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin. Built using contravision, these enormous displays not only created enormous excitement in each city, but were also the first of their kind at those theatres, paving the way for all future visiting productions.

Our pride is there for all to see!

Beverley Knight singing “Queen of The Night”

The Bodyguard have just released the very first video of Beverley Knight singing an excerpt from the iconic Whitney Houston track “Queen of The Night”. What's more, the video was such a sensation that it racked up over 150,000 views in less than 48 hours, making it the number one most viewed and shared YouTube video in the UK! Featured on The Bodyguard's official website, Facebook and Twitter, the clip is the first chance to see the multi-award-winning superstar perform ahead of her joining the cast as Rachel Marron from 9 September 2013. MAMMA MIA! has collaborated with the UK's top nail brand Nails Inc to create a special, limited edition MAMMA MIA! nail varnish. A constant presence on the catwalk and at Fashion Week, the innovative and highly sought after Nails Inc were the perfect choice to partner MAMMA MIA!, and the result was a gorgeous, glossy, hot pink shade inspired by the summer theme of the smash-hit musical. The partnership was also promoted with a sparkling online and social media presence, including competitions to win tickets to the show and fantastic Nails Inc luxury products.

Mamma Mia! - The perfect marriage of theatre and fashion

Mamma Mia! has teamed up with ELLE fashion magazine and Greek haute couture designer Celia Kritharioti for an amazing, once in a lifetime prize! ELLE are offering their readers a chance to win an exquisite wedding dress designed especially by Celia, whose clients include Jennifer Lopez and Gemma Arterton, in a promotion which is tailor-made for the wedding-themed musical. ELLE arranged a stunning photoshoot at the Novello Theatre, home of Mamma Mia!, and you can get a glimpse of the wonderful dress in this behind-the-scenes photo here.

Groundbreaking music from the Underground

Once - Busking on the Underground

Once has made history as the first ever West End musical to busk on the London Underground! Declan Bennett, who plays heartbroken busker "Guy" in the award-winning show, spent two hours with fellow cast members delighting commuters in Leicester Square Tube Station to celebrate ten years of licensed busking on the Underground. With rousing renditions of songs from Once and with all proceeds going to charity, this was a fantastic showcase for the musical and a wonderful way to pay tribute to a London institution.

A revolution in art

Les Misérables has inspired two stunning pieces of art this week.

Congratulations Molly Hart

Firstly, congratulations to 18-year-old Molly Hart for winning the competition to create artwork for the Les Misérables Facebook page run by Dewynters. The competition was in celebration of an astounding 300,000 "Likes" the site has now achieved. Her entry was chosen by Cameron Mackintosh himself, and now adorns the page - which is by some distance the most popular Facebook page of all West End musicals.

Les Misérables Theatre Mural

Dewynters also designed a very special Les Misérables mural for the side of the Queen's Theatre in London. Commisioned by Cameron Mackintosh, the beautiful, eye-catching piece was painted by artist Martin Jarvis and is already set to be an iconic addition to the West End.

Hello Strand!

We have a new home!

It's been a moving and exciting experience this week as Dewynters waved goodbye to Leicester Square after 25 years, and said hello to wonderful new offices on The Strand. We've had some amazing and unforgettable times in Leicester Square, but with a fantastic West End location along with lovely views across London and the Thames river, Wellington House already feels like home. The legend of Studio 48

The world-famous disco club Studio 48 opened its doors on Friday, for one magical night only. This legendary nightclub and party mecca rolled out the red carpet to invite the lucky VIP members past the doormen, into a glamorous, hidden world of disco lights, dancefloors, roller skates and, er, Twister. With drinks and cocktails served by hunky barman Gary, and a surprise guest appearance from the reclusive Andy Warhol himself (though he did seem a bit quiet), this really was a party that will go down in history. Here's to Studio 125…rumours that Bianca Jagger will ride in on a white horse are as yet unconfirmed.

There was plenty of funny business and a whole lot of fundraising going on at Dewynters on Red Nose Day 2013. A special, limited edition t-shirt was produced (featuring a photo of everyone in the company wearing a red nose), and an incredible lunch sale not only showcased the very finest of Dewynters' home cooking, but also cleared out the entire West End of crisps. By the end of Friday we'd managed to raise a whopping £431.70 for the fantastic causes supported by Comic Relief…well done everyone!

Designed by Dewynters in collaboration with Puffin Books and Joe Public Marketing, the new "winning chocolate bar"cover gives Roald Dahl's legendary tale a mouthwatering new look that hints at the feast of pleasures inside…proving that sometimes, you really can judge a book by its cover.

Top Hat the Musical tap-danced all over people's computer screens with a fabulous Evening Standard arts page takeover. With several glorious videos filmed on green screen especially for this campaign, the takeover brought a joyous dash of old-fashioned glitz and glamour wonderfully to life. And with a dazzling 30,000 impressions of this beautiful, twirling chorus of white ties and tails, Top Hat really did step out in truly elegant style.

The infamous Cats' eyes, originally hand-painted by Dewynters, were the talk of Edinburgh as they cast a menacing stare across the city on Wednesday 6th February. To mark the return of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical to the road – the Cats tour opened on Saturday 9th February at the Edinburgh Playhouse – the eerie illumination was projected onto one of Edinburgh’s most famous monuments, the Castle Rock, for an exclusive photo call with the Edinburgh Evening News.

Cats is just one of several productions now on the roster of the Dewynters touring department, and publicity doesn't get much more eye-catching!

A Wickedly green partnership with Impact all over town

Wicked the Musical has teamed up with the distribution company Impact by covering one of their vans for a whole year. Promoting the 'green' environmental message that is at the heart of Impact's business, the Wicked van with its "Keeping London Green" and "It's Wicked to be Green" slogans will be seen all over the West End for the next twelve months. How about that for delivering an eco-friendly message!
